Week 16: Start/Sit (Thursday Edition)

December 17, 2008 nlfunk Leave a comment

Sorry for the lack of posts recently. I was very busy preparing for an Arbitration (stupid “job”) and I am leaving tomorrow for the holidays, so needless to say, Fantasy Funk took a backseat… But I thought I would throw something together for the Thursday night game.

Colts @ Jaguars

START:

Peyton Manning: He is playing at a very high level.

Dominic Rhodes: Should fill in for Addai and play well against a suspect defense.

Reggie Wayne: Has not produced as expected lately, but he is a must-start.

Dallas Clark: Do not expect numbers like last week, but he is almost always worth a start.

Maurice Jones-Drew: Fred Taylor is out, so MJD will get all the work.

SIT:

Joseph Addai: He is still beat up and Rhodes is out-producing him. Officially, he is listed as “questionable”.

Marvin Harrison: If you are still playing at this point in the season, you should have better options. And he is listed on the injury report as “questionable”.  UPDATE: Harrison did not make the trip to Jacksonville, so he is out.

Anthony Gonzalez: See Harrison, Marvin. UPDATE: With Harrison out, Gonzalez makes a better play. But I still do not expect much from him.

David Garrard: The Colts are pretty solid against the pass, despite last week. And Garrard does not have Calvin Johnson to throw to.

Fred Taylor: He is on IR. So at least I am guaranteed to get one right.

Dennis Northcutt: The Packers made him look good. The Colts will not allow him to repeat last week’s surprise performance. Although, if you are desperate, I suppose someone in Jacksonville has to catch the ball.

Week 15: Injury Updates

December 13, 2008 nlfunk 2 comments

QB Jeff Garcia: Garcia is questionable and may not start. If he cannot go, QB Luke McCown would get the start. I do not recommend either of them against the Falcons. UPDATE 12/15/08: Garcia has been ruled out. QB Brian Griese will get the start.

QB Gus Frerotte: Frerotte (back) is doubtful. If he cannot go, QB Tavaris Jackson will get the start. Avoid him. Even against the Cardinals.

QB Matt Hasselbeck: Hasselbeck is out this week. QB Seneca Wallace will get another start. If you are desperate, he might do well against the Rams.

RB Brandon Jacobs: Jacobs (knee) is out this week. Look for RB Ahmad Bradshaw and RB Derrick Ward to get more work. Both have a pretty good matchup against the Cowboys.

UPDATE 12/15/08: RB Reggie Bush: Bush (knee) will undergo an MRI on his knee and may miss the rest of the season. With Bush out, expect RB Pierre Thomas to get more carries and perform pretty well.

RB Fred Taylor: Taylor (hand) is on IR. RB Maurice Jones-Drew will get all the carries.

RB Frank Gore: Gore (ankle) will not play this weekend. RB Deshaun Foster will get the start.

RB Marion Barber: Barber (toe) is listed as probable this week. But even if he does play, he will likely split carries with RB Tashard Choice, who looked good last week against Pittsburgh.

RB Ray Rice: Rice (shin) is doubtful. So look for RB Willis McGahee and RB Le’Ron McClain to get more work.

RB LenDale White: White missed two straight practices this week. His status for the game against the Texans is unclear. If he cannot go, expect RB Chris Johnson to have a big game.

RB Joseph Addai: Addai (shoulder) is questionable this week. I expect RB Dominic Rhodes, who has been playing well, to get more work. He has a very good matchup. UPDATE 12/15/08: Addai plans to dress for the game, but I expect Rhodes to get nearly all the carries, still.

Week 15: RB Rankings

I like rankings better than the start/sit recommendations. Because it allows me to be “kinda right” and “kinda wrong” instead of “definitely right” or “absolutely wrong”.  Either  way, here are my RB rankings for week 15. Also, check out my QB Rankings.

Week 15: Waiver Wire

December 9, 2008 nlfunk Leave a comment

Here are some names to consider adding to your roster:

QB Matt Schaub: He played well against Green Bay, but the Texans play Tennessee next week. This is not a good matchup for him. But he looked sharp in his first game back from injury.

QB Kyle Orton: You could do worse. He plays the Saints, Packers, and Texans during the last three weeks of the season.

RB Tashard Choice: The rookie piled up 170 total yards in place of injured RB Marion Barber (toe, calf) against a very stout Steelers defense. Keep an eye on Barber’s status, though. If he is back next week, Choice has very little value.

RB Tatum Bell: Bell will take over the starting RB position in Denver now that RB Peyton Hillis is on IR with a hamstring injury. Be careful, though. RB Selvin Young could also get some carries, and you just never know what will happen in Denver.

RB Pierre Thomas: Oddly enough, he is still available in some leagues.

RB Ladell Betts: It seems like RB Clinton Portis is still banged up and the Skins are going to give Betts a chance to rack up some yards. He had 60 total yards against a tough Ravens defense, but keep an eye on the status of Portis. It is unclear how much work each will get, at this point.

RB Cadillac Williams: Cadillac scored a TD in his second consecutive game. Although he has only averaged 23 rushing yards since returning to the lineup, he might be worth adding to see how the Bucs use him down the stretch.

WR Domenik Hixon: He was the hot waiver wire add last week, so I doubt he is available. But he had a fairly poor showing (although he dropped a long pass that could have turned into a TD), so maybe someone dropped him again. He should do well against Dallas this week.

WR Devin Hester: He is actually playing pretty well lately, and he has some very easy matchups down the stretch (Saints, Packers, Texans).

WR Deion Branch: He had 2 TDs last week and looks to be (mostly) healthy. Plus, he has some favorable matchups coming up (Rams, Jets, Cardinals).

Week 15: injury Update

December 9, 2008 nlfunk Leave a comment

Here are some key injuries as you head into the final stretch of the season:

QB Gus Frerotte: Frerotte (back) missed the second half against the Lions. Advice: Frerotte’s status for this weekend is unclear. If he cannot go, QB Tavaris Jackson will start in his place. I would avoid both.

RB Marion Barber: Barber (toe, calf) missed last week’s game against Pittsburgh and his status for this week is unclear. Advice: It came out recently that it was Barber’s calf, not his toe, was what kept him out of the Pittsburgh game. And now Cowboy’s owner Jerry Jones is calling Barber out in the media for not playing. Plus, RB Tashard Choice played surprisingly well against a very tough defense. This will be interesting to watch.

RB Brandon Jacobs: Jacobs (knee) is expected to be active this week. Advice: Jacobs injured his knee against the Eagles, but it is not considered serious and he should be ready to go in week 15.

RB Frank Gore: Gore (ankle) missed some time last week but should be ready this week. Advice: Do not worry, but you might want to grab RB Deshaun Foster just in case.

RB Willie Parker: Parker (knee, shoulder) was active against Dallas. Advice: Parker got 15 touches, but RB Mewelde Moore got 9 and RB Gary Russell got 4.  The Steelers are going to stick with Parker, but it is clear that the other guys are going to be involved, as well.

RB Peyton Hillis: Hillis (hamstring) is on IR and will miss the rest of the year. Advice: As quickly as he rose to fantasy stardom, he has disappeared. Now RB Tatum Bell will get his shot in the Denver backfield.

WR Matt Jomes: Jones is not injured, but he has (finally) been suspended by the NFL for the last three games of the year. Advice: He is done. Cut him.
